On Wednesday 2 May 2012, Year 7 Band B went out to Haldon forest for the day for some ‘outdoor adventure!’   As part of their iLearn course Year 7 have been looking at National Parks, the Countryside Code, Map reading and assessing risks.

During the day students were able to have a go at various activities, some more individually challenging than others and some that required team work and cooperation.  Year 7 built the most amazing shelters using only material that they could forage from the forest floor and had to use their best creative thinking skills in order to succeed.  Some shelters were so sturdy that you could definitely have used them to get out of the rain; some had nice touches like a soft moss lining or seats made from logs; one even had a fireplace!!

The opportunity to try mountain biking and archery was brilliant and all of the students who tried these activities were often seen beaming with a sense of achievement.

The day spent  at Haldon Forest was fabulous and really enjoyable for staff and students.  Being outdoors offers a different set of challenges for everyone and on behalf of the staff I would like to say ‘well done’ to Year 7 for their good behaviour and ‘have-a-go’ attitude.  Many people had the chance to work with others that they did not really know that well and not once was anyone heard to say ‘I’m not doing that’ or ‘ I don’t want to work with him’.

We are lucky to have such a great natural resource on our doorstep and I hope that our day trip might spark interest in these youngsters to get out and enjoy Devon more!
